Izzy Maywood

Sound Technician & Designer

Header Image

I'm a technician based in Brooklyn, NYC. I've worked with circuses, theaters, bands, and recording studios. For work I fly speakers, mix shows, label tails, network, coordinate RF, and everything in between. I have a computer science degree from the University of Rochester and I love all things digital. Feel free to reach out to me!

New Victory Theater 2025

I worked on a freelance basis for New Victory Theater, an off-Broadway theater in Times Square that books shows for kids and families. I programmed the audio console, substituted as A1, and completed other stagehand tasks to bring Zip Zap Circus: Moya and The Magic City to life.

Champions of Magic 2025

I was the sound editor for the tech of Champions of Magic 2025: Chasing the Unbelievable. COM is in its 13th year of touring and the production team brought me on to design SFX, edit act music, and build the QLab session for their upcoming 2025 show. I'd love to show more of my pictures from this job, but I wouldn't want to reveal any secrets...

Big Apple Circus 2024

I was A2 for Big Apple Circus 2024 - Hometown Playground. BAC hired me to set up and configure an audio rental package, coordinate 16 channels of wireless audio in a noisy RF environment, fit headset mics on cast members, align and service the projectors, maintain the comm system, and follow the A2 track for 90 shows in 9 weeks. I also subbed for the A1 and mixed the show from front of house. Some weeks we did 16 shows!

Circus Smirkus 2023 & 2024

I toured for two summer seasons as A1 with Circus Smirkus, a nonprofit tented circus show with teenage performers. Over two years I facilitated 28 load-ins and load-outs and operated the front of house console for 128 shows. Every load in I climbed at height to rig an 18-speaker Meyer Sound system. I also assisted sound designer Ben Scheff to create the SFX for the show.

The Eastman School of Music

I was a live sound and studio assistant at the Eastman School of Music in 2023 and 2024 while I worked on my computer science degree at the college next door. I assisted on film scoring, big-band jazz, and wind ensemble recording sessions. Some of the sessions had over 60 channels! I helped set up and strike microphones and equipment for performances. I also did technical maintanence and cleaning of the facility's equipment. Control room A has an SSL Duality Delta large-format console that I practiced on.

Los Depressos Recording Studio

In 2024 I interned at Los Depressos recording studio, a new studio in Bed-Stuy. "Bassy" Bob Brockmann is rennovating a historic recording studio and adding a second floor with a Dolby Atmos mixing room. While I interned there, they were finishing the Atmos room (I helped with the wiring and speaker installs) and building a rooftop greenhouse for live performances and recordings. I helped organize hundreds of cables, networked the facility with wireless access points, cleaned off some of the grime, and sat in on a few recording sessions.

Teaching Assistant @ University of Rochester

While studying at the University of Rochester, I was employed as a teaching assistant for AME 191: The Art and Tech of Recording. I worked for professor Steven Roessner, a Grammy-winning recording engineer and producer. As TA I taught workshops in the University recording facilities, graded tests, served as an on-call technician for problems with the studio, and developed lesson plans.
